Life is a balancing act. I took a break, after having a successful career of more than 15 years in pharmaceutical industry and reanalysed what mattered most to me. While completing my sustainable gardening course I met some great people , who were happy to make small changes to their lifestyle in order to contribute to a sustainable planet. They were from different demographics and identity groups, but they all wanted to commit to contributing to their community.
I met a woman who always carried a spare eco-friendly bag when she was out shopping, so she could give it to someone who was about to use a plastic one instead. Her belief was that at least she could reduce one plastic bag from going into a landfill. People like her inspired me to believe that you don't need to change your entire life to make a difference. Small changes do matter and can contribute to a more sustainable future. Believing that true change started from within, I started making changes in my own home.
Looking around the house, I was surprised to see how many chemicals were used in making the detergents, I use everyday to keep my home clean and safe for my family. I started reading about the harmful effects of using these chemical detergents and their contribution to aquatic toxicity, the environment, and our own personal health. Using my scientific background and product development experience, I decided to make safer detergents that have a significantly lower environmental impact without using harmful, chemical ingredients. I began making cleaning detergents using ingredients I was familiar with, such as soapnuts or soapberries. It was something I used as a kid, so I started making small batches and giving it to friends to try. Based on their feedback, I made changes to improve the efficiency of the product.
Once I was happy with the product formulations, I embarked on a journey to make these products available to the wider community. The journey was interesting and challenging, but I had great support from my family and friends. I could not have done this without their help and support.
We are proud to say that our products are Australian and handmade. We are a small, family-owned business. We label all our ingredients clearly so you know there are no dangerous chemicals involved.
Our product manufacturing involves a lean model, with minimum processing, and all the ingredients used are carefully chosen to have minimum environmental impact.
Why did we choose the name 'Wattle Organics'?
The resilience of “wattle” represents the spirit of the Australian people. We could not find a better name for our organisation than one that represents resilience.
We believe that persistence, adaptability and resilience are key attributes required in today’s society to achieve a sustainable future.
